Rheumatoid Arthritis

The causes of rheumatoid arthritis are not certain, but there are many likely suspects.  The condition may follow a viral infection or other illness.  It may be related to the glands, hormones, or perhaps be due to a defect in the auto-immune system.  Regardless of the cause, rheumatoid arthritis is extremely painful.  The pain is caused by inflammation of the fibrous connective tissue around the joints.  Although any joint can be involved, it most often impacts the wrists and knuckles.

This condition may lead to deformity and loss of motion in the joints.  It may be recognized by the shiny tight skin around and over the affected areas as well as swelling around the joints and stiffness in the hands and/or limbs.
